We live in an electronic world. At work, home, and everywhere we go electronics (computers, monitors, televisions) are involved in almost everything we do. Household electronics, commonly called Electronic Waste (E-Waste), is a fast growing segment of our waste – and many of these items can be a health hazard and can affect the environment if not disposed of properly.
Electronics, especially televisions, computers and cell phones, contain heavy metals like lead, mercury, nickel, and chromium. Older televisions and computer monitors contain an average of four pounds of lead. If improperly disposed of, these hazardous materials can be released into the environment, posing a threat to human health.
Many electronics can be recycled for repair and reuse or for disassembly, where material components like metals and plastics can be harvested and used in manufacturing. This reduces the demand for raw materials and limited natural resources.
The White River RSWMD strongly urges its citizens to recycle electronic waste. Arkansas has placed a priority on the recycling of televisions, computers and computer accessories and cell phones; however, items accepted by EPA permitted e-waste recycling operations normally include:
Computer Files and Security: The State of Arkansas uses the services of UNICOR for computer recycling. In the recycling process, computer hard drives are stripped of memory and operating systems are reloaded, erasing any remaining files.
For information about electronic waste recycling contact a collection center near you, view a location map of District E-Waste Collection Centers (pdf map).
